so imagine this...

if you've been reading my blog, I'm sure there is one thing that comes across pretty strong.

I like to cook. Cook bake, grill whatever...If it involves food I enjoy doing it. I'm also something of a perfectionist at it. It has to be right, and I don't trust my own pallet. I have to have guinea pigs to try everything on and if they don't rave 500 times about how good it is, chances are I won't make it again.

So imagine this if you will... I have an almost 14yr old son who not only usually doesn't like what I cook outside of the normal realm of cooking, but he also doesn't like to be in the kitchen. Not that I blame him much with my perfectionism that rears it's ugly head when things don't go my way in there. I wouldn't want to be in there with me either!

So tonight he wants brownies for his school party tomorrow. Fine. You've made brownies before - you can make these. Did I mention my son hates to read? Anything? Even magazines are a far stretch for him sometimes becuase he'd much rather be doing something that is occupying his hands as well as his brain. Sooo I say to him measure out the amount of water you need, count out your eggs, Yes I'll crack them for you, measure out your oil. (we're using a box here - it's not rocket science).

Sooo the kid meausres out 2 1/2 cups of water. I'm thinking that's a lot of liquid for brownies, but he's insisting it's 1 1/4 cups per box. I'm still thinking that's too much. But he's insisting so I let him measure it out. I go in there to crack the eggs and glance at the box. Sure enough it's 1/4 cup of water to go in the mixture.

Well now what? Everything is poured in the bowl and you can't exactly take water out of a recipe you know? Mom suggests adding another box of brownie mix. One can only hope it'll come out more like cake at least right? So no more eggs, no more water or oil, but one more brownie mix box. our bowl is almost overflowing. we pour it into the pan for baking, and I have now baked it for over an hour. The center is STILL not toothpick clean, but the crispy top layer is disconnecting itself from the rest of the cake. Boy I wish I had a digital camera right now to show you what I mean.

Anywho I don't think this has worked. We have a gooey gooey center, and overbaked edges. I think he'll be taking honey buns to school instead!
